In sub-Saharan Africa, more people have mobile money accounts than bank accounts. M-Pesa alone processes over $300 billion in transactions annually across Kenya, Tanzania, and beyond. MTN Mobile Money serves 60+ million users across West and Central Africa.
Yet almost every church management platform built in the US assumes your congregation gives via credit card or ACH bank transfer. If your members give through M-Pesa, MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money, or bank transfers, most church software simply cannot track it.
We built Gathrik's donation system to handle this reality.
The Problem: US Church Software in a Mobile Money World
Here is what happens when an African church tries to use a typical US-built church management platform:
- Members give through M-Pesa on Sunday
- The church treasurer receives the M-Pesa confirmation
- The treasurer manually records the donation in the church software
- But the software only has "credit card" and "bank transfer" as payment method options
- So the treasurer selects "other" and loses the ability to filter or report by payment method
- Tax receipts and giving reports do not reflect how people actually gave
The software was not built for this workflow. It was built for a US church where a member taps "give" in the app, enters a credit card, and the transaction is automatically recorded.
How Gathrik Handles Mobile Money
Gathrik's donation tracking includes mobile money as a first-class payment method. When your treasurer records a donation, they select from:
- Cash
- Check
- Credit/debit card
- Bank transfer
- Mobile money
- Online
- Other
Each method is tracked separately, so you can report on how your congregation actually gives. Your finance committee can see: "42% of donations came via mobile money, 31% cash, 18% bank transfer, 9% online."
This matters for planning. If most of your giving comes through mobile money, investing in online card processing is not the priority. Understanding your actual giving mix helps you serve your congregation better.
Recording Mobile Money Donations
The workflow is straightforward:
- Member sends money via M-Pesa, MTN Mobile Money, or another provider
- Church treasurer opens Gathrik's donation form
- Selects the donor (linked to their member profile)
- Enters the amount and selects "Mobile money" as payment method
- Adds the fund designation (tithe, offering, missions, etc.)
- Saves
The donation appears on the member's profile, in the finance dashboard, and on their year-end giving statement. The treasurer can also add notes (like the M-Pesa transaction ID) for audit purposes.
What About Automatic Mobile Money Integration?
Let us be transparent. Gathrik does not currently integrate directly with M-Pesa, MTN Mobile Money, or other mobile money APIs for automatic transaction capture. Donations are recorded manually by church staff.
This is a limitation. Direct API integration would allow donations to flow in automatically. We are evaluating M-Pesa Daraja API and Flutterwave for future integration, but it is not shipped yet.
What we do offer today:
- Mobile money as a tracked payment method (not lumped into "other")
- Per-member giving history regardless of payment method
- Tax receipts that cover all giving including mobile money
- Finance dashboard that breaks down giving by payment method
- Campaign tracking that works across all payment methods
For churches that want fully automated mobile money giving today, services like Flutterwave, Paystack, or direct M-Pesa integration through a third-party tool can handle the collection. You can then record those donations in Gathrik for centralized tracking and reporting.
Regional Pricing: Software That Costs What You Can Afford
Beyond payment methods, there is the cost problem. A church in Nairobi with 200 members has a fundamentally different budget than a church in Nashville with 200 members.
Gathrik uses regional pricing. We adjust our pricing based on your church's billing country so you are not paying Silicon Valley rates on a local church budget. We do not publish specific regional amounts (they vary), but the principle is simple: fair pricing for your market.
SMS Routing for International Churches
Mobile money is how African churches receive money. WhatsApp and SMS are how they communicate.
Gathrik's SMS routing automatically sends messages through the cheapest provider for each member's country. If your church has members in Nigeria, Kenya, the UK, and the US, each SMS routes through the best provider for that destination. You do not manage multiple SMS providers or pay US rates for African phone numbers.
Combined with WhatsApp messaging (included on Standard and Pro plans), your church can communicate with every member regardless of where they are, through the channel they actually use.
Who This Is Built For
- African churches using M-Pesa, MTN Mobile Money, or Airtel Money for giving
- Diaspora churches with members giving from multiple countries using different payment methods
- Churches transitioning from cash who need to track both cash and mobile money in one system
- Church treasurers who are tired of recording mobile money donations as "other" in US-built software
