697 million Christians live in sub-Saharan Africa, making it the largest Christian region in the world. That number grew 31% between 2010 and 2020, according to Pew Research. The fastest-growing churches on the planet are in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, and South Africa.
Yet when you search for church management software, everything you find was built in California for churches in Texas. Credit card giving. US phone numbers for SMS. Pricing in US dollars. English only.
We built Gathrik because we think the largest and fastest-growing Christian population on earth deserves software that works for them, not software adapted from the US with a different price tag.
What "Built for Africa" Actually Means
It is not just cheaper pricing (though that matters). It is fundamental product decisions that reflect how African churches actually operate.
Communication: WhatsApp First, Not Email First
In Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and most of sub-Saharan Africa, WhatsApp is not a nice-to-have. It is how churches function. Prayer chains, service reminders, small group coordination, pastoral check-ins, and announcements all happen on WhatsApp.
Most church software does not support WhatsApp at all. Gathrik connects directly to the Meta WhatsApp Business API. You send templated messages to individual members or groups, track delivery, and manage opt-ins. All from the same interface where you send emails and SMS.

Giving: Mobile Money, Not Just Credit Cards
When a member in Nairobi gives their tithe, they send it via M-Pesa. In Lagos, it might be a bank transfer or Flutterwave. In Accra, MTN Mobile Money.
Gathrik tracks every payment method equally: cash, check, card, bank transfer, mobile money, and online. Your finance reports break down giving by method so you can see how your congregation actually gives. Tax receipts and giving statements work regardless of how the money came in.

Pricing: For Your Market, Not Silicon Valley
A church in Lagos with 300 members operates on a fundamentally different budget than a church in Los Angeles with 300 members. Charging both the same price is not fair pricing. It is lazy pricing.
Gathrik uses regional pricing. We adjust based on your church's billing country. We do not publish specific amounts because they vary, but the principle is consistent: you pay what is fair for your market.
SMS: Routed Smart, Not Priced Flat
International SMS costs vary wildly. Sending a text to a Nigerian number costs different than sending to a UK number or a US number. Most church platforms charge a flat US SMS rate regardless of destination.
Gathrik routes every SMS through the cheapest provider for each member's country. If your church has members across Nigeria, Ghana, the UK, and the US, each message routes optimally. This can cut SMS costs by 40-60% compared to a single US provider.
What African Churches Actually Need
We talked to church leaders in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, and the UK diaspora before building Gathrik. The same five needs came up in every conversation:
1. Member management that works on any device. Most church administrators in Africa work from their phone, not a desktop. Gathrik's interface is responsive and works in mobile browsers.
2. Attendance tracking that does not require hardware. Label printers and tablet kiosks are a luxury. Gathrik's QR code check-in works with a printed piece of paper and a member's phone camera. Read the check-in guide
3. Communication on WhatsApp. Not email. Not proprietary apps. WhatsApp. This was the number one request in every conversation.
4. Giving tracking for all payment methods. Cash, mobile money, bank transfer, online. All tracked equally. All reported together. All generating tax receipts.
5. Affordable pricing. Not "$72/month minimum." Something that reflects the reality of church budgets outside North America.

The Diaspora Angle
Many African churches have members scattered across multiple countries. A Nigerian church in London has members in the UK, Nigeria, Ghana, and the US. A Kenyan church in Nairobi has members who relocated to Canada and Australia.
Managing a multi-country congregation means:
- SMS that works across international borders (Gathrik's smart routing)
- WhatsApp that reaches everyone (98%+ delivery rates globally)
- Giving tracking that handles multiple payment methods and currencies
- A member database that links families even when they are on different continents
Gathrik was built for exactly this situation. One platform that serves your entire congregation regardless of where they are.
What We Are Still Building
We are transparent about gaps:
- Multi-language support is not shipped yet. Gathrik is English-only. For francophone African churches or Portuguese-speaking congregations, this is a real limitation. It is on our roadmap.
- Direct M-Pesa/MTN API integration for automatic giving capture is not built yet. Donations are recorded manually by church staff.
- Offline mode for areas with unreliable internet is not available. You need a connection to use Gathrik.
These are real limitations. If any of them are dealbreakers for your church, we understand. We are working on them.
